Ande’Ja (An-Day-Jah) Johnson

Hartford Public Library

Hello, my name is Ande’Ja Johsnon. As I live, I create, I believe we were all created to create. I find that my spiritual practices have a heavy influence on the pieces that my heart, hands and my mind produce, influencing me to share peace with others. I have found that my expression allows me to teach others. I’d like to say the temple that my soul resides in, is my base and the seeds of my creativity, land where they may. In other words, I don’t have a studio or a preferred place to produce work in. I simply create wherever I happen to be at the time I feel like doing so. I was born in Hartford, CT but I know many places I can consider as pivotal in my upbringing as “birth places”. I have spent the majority of my younger years in South Carolina and my teenage years in Virginia, all places I’ve resided in have influenced me in different ways tremendously. I basically use whatever I can get my hands on to help me express and translate the messages I intend to get across, I am not particularly attached to any one type of media. Some of my artwork includes foils, oil paint, metallics, resin, wire, beads, acrylic, and I even create digital pieces as well. In recent creations I have been inspired to use hair as it is a historically significant part of my cultural experience.
